Sickening.
As the saying goes, better 100 guilty persons should go free than 1 innocent should suffer.
I am fiercely opposed to the death penalty, and this example goes a long way towards conveying why.

It is better that ten guilty persons escape than that one innocent suffer. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackstone%27s_ratio https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackstone%27s_ratio The death penalty stoops to the level of violent offenders and state processes that can never get convictions perfectly correct all of the time to be moral and ethical. There is no "undo" button on state-sanctioned murder, needle or drone strike.
