The Paris Climate Agreement and future sea-level rise from Antarctica
- Tepix 5y agoNo matter where you look, whether it's the climate or the oceans, we're screwed! It's no longer about preventing the upcoming catastrophes, it's merely about softening their impact now. The sooner we act decisively, the better.
- cjbenedikt 5y agoMethinks research of such importance should be freely accessible.
- kwere 5y agodumb question: to stop the sea raising due to ice melting could we store ca 30 million cubic kilometers of ice somewhere or move it in space with some kind of space elevator? Expensive but how many trillions $ losses would cost a few meter increase of sea level?
- AnimalMuppet 5y agoWater is a huge part of the difference between Earth and an uninhabitable rock. No, let's not move it into space.
- scrollaway 5y agoTo move such immense amounts of water, you need energy. A lot of it. For that energy to be available, you will likely be creating carbon dioxide. This raising the levels further. This requiring more energy. It's kinda like the rocket fuel equation, except the end result is throwing some of the most precious resource we have into space. If an energy hungry solution is what you are after, you'll be far better off raising the landmasses at risk than trying to siphon the oceans.
- tengbretson 5y agoSo some rough calculations shows that raising sea level .5 cm would give an extra 3044143911700 liters of water in the oceans. Also, studies show that producing 1 kilogram of almonds consumes 10240 liters of water, and that a single almond tree can produce 50 kilograms of almonds per year. All this means that we could offset .5 cm of rise by planting about 5.9 million almond trees!
- scrollaway 5y agoI think your comment is in jest but in case someone else interprets it as not: mind that, just like for humans, "consumed" water doesn't simply disappear; everything that doesn't end up as plant product is returned to the surrounding ecosystem, and eventually back to the ocean. Nothing ever disappears.

- zackees 5y agoHere is John Kerry saying that in 5 years the artic will be ice free in the summer. https://twitter.com/perpetualmaniac/status/1379850461583339522?s=21 https://twitter.com/perpetualmaniac/status/13798504615833395... I’ve been listening to global warming alarmism for 30 years of my life and none of the predictions of sea level rise have panned out. The forest fires on the west coast have more to do with accumulated fuel on the forrest floor and suppression of seasonal fires than extremely hot temperatures. The fact that China now produces more CO2 than the rest of the world combined, but yet is exempt from these carbon credit tax schemes is telling. Additionally, even if raising CO2 levels was a bad thing, we’ve had the solution for it since the 1960’s, clean nuclear energy to obsolete fossil fuels. The production of which has been sabotaged by environmentalists that haven’t bothered to read that the per terrawatt death rate of nuclear is an order of magnitude less dangerous then the next least dangerous power source. Additionally, fertilizing the oceans with Iron can sequester huge amounts of CO2, yet the UN banned the study of this in international waters in 2008. As the networked oligarchy shows its face, Americans are waking up to the fact that the science being pushed on the mainstream media outlets are a form of political warfare to destroy western industries to the benefit of Chinese industries which get near impunity to continue to pollute.
