I am reviewing for many journals. Most of the time reviewers have no idea what the articles are really about and just correct typos and design issues. And you get harrassed by publishers to review, for free, because there is so much crap in the pipeline that they need a way to process it. This system is completely broken and defended by scoentists that benefit from it. It is detrimental to science and society as a whole.
- zwieback 6y agoWhat's the spread of "quality" in the journals you review for? I would assume that there are still some organizations (say IEEE or SPIE in my field) where the reputation counts for something.
- ta988 6y agoThey are all field journals. I only review for what I consider good ones now (in term of quality, I don't care about impact factors). I used to do some reviews for an Open Access publisher that went from predatory to starting to be reputable, but they went back to dubious practices so I stopped dealing with them totally. That plus their director spreading hateful comments on mailing lists and them not making a statement.
