That reasoning "Everyone loves presents!", is so enraging to me. It's been done to me on many levels with many things, from dancing, to drinking alcohol, to eating some food that is supposed to be so amazingly delicious. Every single time, it's this twisted thinking that you're being done a favor... that this person in all their benevolence knows what is good for you, and how dare you reject their goodwill! What is really going on, in my opinion, is the desire to transform others into your own image... the desire to give and to obtain the credit of being the giver.
Time and time again people would say, "well you're missing out then", almost out of spite because I was so adamant to reject their offering. I don't get it, and because of that it's hard to partake in standard social practices, where conformity is not only expected but sometimes the lack of it gets punished.
