This is tangential to the issue, but when I was in school, around 2005 in the UK we had a fascinating IT class where the the teacher explained all the different facts that can be derived from a simple loyalty card (the kind you use in shops to collect points and claim rewards). I don't remember all the details but I remember feeling alarmed by how much they can learn about you, and haven't ever used one since. I think it would be great to look at some benign hypothetical software platforms, with students, and run through this same exercise to understand why data protection matters.
