Understanding Homelessness in San Francisco
- proc0 5y ago> That may mean they were staying with friends or family for just a few months, or it may mean they were born and raised here and just couldn't afford the ever-rising rents. This would be an important distinction, right? I met someone when I was in college there, that was supposed to meet their relative after arriving from the Midwest, and they never showed up. So he had to be homeless for a few months, but I guess being young he got a job and got out of it. This is 15 years ago. However I would not have considered him as someone who is from SF and became homeless. Clearly there are people coming into the city for whatever opportunity, and it doesn't work out. I've personally talked to several unfortunate people in SF, and one of the major reasons they're in SF is because police doesn't do anything and they know this! And then I think some of that data must be wrong for this claim: "Nobody wants to sleep outside. Nobody wants to hunt for a bathroom or be unable to bathe. ", in my experience talking to people living on the streets of SF, they will tell you they do want housing and all that, but when you ask them how much it is worth for them, you will get honest answers that it isn't a big deal to sleep outside, especially if you're younger. People really value saving the rent money. Again, the problem here is there are many reasons people are outside, and they vary as much as the people themselves. I don't know what the solution is, but people have been saying it's housing for more than a decade... why is this not solved? How many more decades until people understand they don't understand?
