This is the first book to introduce the concept of a metaverse.
- periheli0n 5y agoI first read it in 1999, when half of it sounded like science fiction, like the computer map in the pizza delivery vehicle, and the robot dog, and the other half had already become real, like the metaverse (this was just when Second Life came up). Today almost all of the gadgets described in the book have become real products that can be purchased. Except the pencil-sized minigun maybe.
- dharmab 5y agoThe minigun was suitcase-sized, and such weapons have been built: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4veQxu-NWM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4veQxu-NWM I'd say the farthest from reality are the skateboard/motorcycle wheels.
- jhallenworld 5y agoThere is more: the pizza tracker: https://www.huffpost.com/entry/dominos-pizza-tracker_b_5947734 https://www.huffpost.com/entry/dominos-pizza-tracker_b_59477... Also, sadly, most gated communities are basically "white columns" burbclaves.
