  There's an old joke about a very old couple that goes before a judge to get a divorce. The judge asks them how long they've been together. They say 75 years. "And why are you getting a divorce now?" the judge asks. "We wanted to wait until the children died."

  the youngest is 18 now. maybe the marriage is gone for years and they were waiting for the kids to come of age? pure speculation
