The dad in Christmas Vacation was a food chemist developing a non-nutritive varnish to make cereal stay crunchy longer, but the way that line is delivered makes it clear it's mocking the job.
- akiselev 5y agoI think the screenwriter was making a very obscure joke, not mocking the job. You can use varnish to preserve dry baked goods for display like in a bakery or for a Hollywood prop.
