Its not cheaper. You are not seeing the hidden costs which are subsidized via taxes. In the US gov workers retire MUCH earlier than normal working people, this creates a huge financial liability keeping up with decades of pensions.
I was an ebay powerseller and dealing with ups was always far better than usps, many times by a big margin.
