Great post! But so many poor posts about dishwashers in the thread. Ask anyone who services dishwashers (well outside the US at least) and they'll tell you two things:
1) Don't rinse first but if you do only use cold water. I have no idea why on earth dishwashers are connected to hot water in the US as this will make the first rinse work very poorly indeed. It is supposed to be cold to removed starches and dairy products...
2) Tabs are a no go but if you insist it should be soap only (not those 3-in-1 etc.) and should be broken in half. It will gunk up the machine in the long run otherwise.
I'd bet that dishwashers would need to be serviced or replaced half as often on average if everyone did this.

- pitaj 6y agoMy dishwasher manual says to run the sink until water is hot before starting the dishwasher. Seems to disagree with #1
- INTPenis 6y agoWhere? The US? OP is right about the cold water, here in Sweden dishwashers are only connected to cold water and often say in the manual that they take nothing but cold water.
- pitaj 6y agoYes I'm in the US. Here's a quote from the guide: Start or Resume a Cycle NOTE: Run hot water at the sink nearest your dishwasher until the water is hot. Turn off water.
- Dah00n 6y agoYes it's a strange idea in the US that water should be preheated. Using cold water first is a lot more effective at removing things like dairy and eggs for example. It's way more environmentally friendly to use cold water and let the dishwasher heat it to the correct temperature especially since the first rinse is short so the heated water will just be pumped out again pretty fast.
- apexalpha 6y agoReally? Why no. 2? Literally anyone I know uses tabs...

- Dah00n 6y agoThere's too much soap in each tab (to sell more tabs). They also often include things that a dishwasher do need but not where the tab goes. For example some have salt in them (which doesn't belong in the main compartment but in the water softener).
