Oh, there are issues with breathing any kind of dust. Big issues. We should avoid adding dust into the air. Plastics, unlike inorganic dust, bind to heavy metals and organic pollutants. Animals (of all sizes, but this concerns mostly plankton) mistake them for food and this causes pollutants to concentrate in the food chain. Microplastics in soil also lower yield and have other adverse effects on crops (but this afaik needs to be studied more).
