Why do people always call this greed? Folks need to eat, and I don’t think it’s wrong to want to be able to support a living writing software. Developers should price their software as they see fit, it’s a reflection of their business decisions, not their personal vices. You don’t have to pay them for it if you don’t want to. That’s the way capitalism has always worked, people are looking out for their rational self-interest.
- LocalH 6y agoI don't think that taking something that was once "pay once and get a perpetual license to that specific version" and turning it into "pay $X per month or lose access to the software" is a good thing when it becomes the dominant form of software access. It's fine for that to be an option, but not as the only way.
- jolux 6y agoI mostly agree, I think the JetBrains model where your subscription also buys a perpetual license to the last year you paid for is the best (I’m a happy customer of their all products subscription). But Apple hasn’t made that model easy in the App Store.
