I'm currently working through the book Building Git. Best $30 I've spent in a while. It's about 700 pages, but 200 pages in and I can stage files to/from the index, make commits, and see the current status (although not on a repo with packfiles). I'm thinking about writing a blog post where I write a git commit with hexdump, zlib, and vim.
