In my experience, those channels are usually dominated by people with the most extreme views who use it as a place to bully anyone with opposing views. I've worked with a few people who I enjoyed immensely but my perception of them as a person suffered after learning how they conduct their political discourse. I'd prefer to keep that negativity outside of my work interactions.
- nikisweeting 5y agoSo don't subscribe to the politics channel? That has not been my experience of these channels in general though. I think it depends greatly on the company culture and the people, code of conduct, and tone set by leadership.
- tdfx 5y agoThat's actually exactly what I've done in these situations. You can't lose if you don't play.
- oezi 5y agoI think basecamp got exactly into trouble because of such politics channels which festered over years and when the lid was opened nobody liked what they saw (laughing about customer names). And you are right with leadership you could have prevented it, but at the same time an inclusive workplace is one where leadership doesn't have to monitor each channel.
- nikisweeting 5y agoLaughing about customer names != politics, that would not fly in the politics channels I've been in. > an inclusive workplace is one where leadership doesn't have to monitor each channel I disagree with this statement. Just because there are dedicated channels for a specific subject does not mean they should be unmoderated. There should be a code of conduct and at least light moderation / ability to report misconduct just like all other company communication mediums in shared spaces (i.e. not DMs).
