It is not as that brilliant. Mao wanted to be the leader of the international communists, he was not happy with Stalin. China was in confrontation with the Soviets. At the same time, China's economy was at the edge of collapsing, so CCP need to be friend with the west. At the time Nixon needed to score a Foreign Police achievement. So it happened.
But, China is really good at screw up the west. China has always being spread the misinformation about the west to Chinese people all the time, even when China and the west was having the best relationship. At the same time, as a deeply corrupted power, the CCP knows how to play with the powerful families in the west. So there are so many people in powerful positions support China / China-West trades, when they clearly know China has being undermining the west interest through trade all the time.
- redis_mlc 5y agoI would change Stalin to Khrushchev, but otherwise the above is accurate. (Mao respected Stalin as the head of the communist world, but not Soviet successors.) There is some unholy alliance between the CCP and Wall St. that needs to be rooted out. All the foreign investments, BRI, etc. are funded by Wall St., which is what Trump/Pompeo was working on at the end of 2020. (At some point yuan is useless, and you need USD to do business outside China.) In case you don't know: - Chinese companies listed on US exchanges have 2 sets of books: the real one in China, and whatever they feel like showing to the SEC, if any, depending on "Chinese national security" (when Chinese companies list they're "private", but when they get audited there's "national security interests.") Trump was in the process of fixing that. - China can borrow money from US capital markets, but I've never heard of them paying it back. In fact, there's been a long-running lawsuit about an early unpaid bond issue. - CALpers had a CCP agent near the top, which allowed him to direct Calif. pension investments to China. He has "left". So there's a situation where the CCP controls about $2 trillion of US "cash" that they use to exert their influence globally at the expense of the US. China desperately needs the US to import chips and USD - they can't live without either. Trump's team figured that out, but Biden has foolishly resumed both, squandering a great non-military means of controlling the CCP. But it gets worse - once US funds invest more than 5% or 10% of their assets in China, there's no way to divest - they're at the mercy of the CCP. Just like those companies that built plants in China, like Volkswagen - how can you get out?
