Another way to look at this is... job openings are coming to Basecamp and people know the culture is a no politics at work place. I bet a lot of people will sign up for that. Enough to fill the openings.
- arcturus17 5y agoThis is exactly what I thought, I’d personally find a company with an explicit non-activism policy insanely attractive, all other things being equal.
- bytelines 5y agoDid you have a previous experience at a job where that was an issue?
- arcturus17 5y agoNo, exactly the opposite, every company I’ve ever worked for was neutral without ever needing to enforce it, but anything other than that would be a nightmare for me, so having it as an open statement about culture suits me.
- bachmeier 5y agoThere'll likely be a big pool of applicants that want to work there because of this policy.
- themolecularman 5y agoYea I considered looking into Coinbase when they announced a similar policy - but I've got some equity keeping me at my current job. If that weren't the case I may jump ship.
- distribot 5y agoNot really a buyers market rn. Maybe this ideological position will specifically attract people who feel alienated by SV culture, maybe not. But there's no way that losing a large fraction of your engineering team is anything but a disaster.
- mfer 5y agoLoosing that many people is going to cause a hard time there. I wouldn't call it SV culture. I think it's more the culture of people who are trying to use companies to promote their political ideals. I grew up and first worked in a region where your employer was not your everything. People worked (often times with a diverse set of people) and then outside of work were part of other groups for their interests and ideologies. That separation enabled people from many walks of life to work together. I'd like to see more of this.

- chubbyish 5y agoThe scary thing is that there are so many companies willing to hire these types of employees leaving basecamp. Those who have the expectation of talking progressive politics at work and getting what they want or they leave. I wouldn’t touch any of them.
- brown9-2 5y agoWho says it’s a no politics work place? That’s not what the reporting this week suggests - just that it’s a “don’t disagree with the bosses” workplace.
- b0afc375b5 5y agoTheir /jobs page says no current openings, however. I do love the idea of no politics at work. Politics is not intellectually interesting for me.
