So I finally sorted out what happened to my brain
- PragmaticPulp 6y agoBurnout is very real. The part about long-term depletions of brain glucose and dopamine is not real, though. Eating a meal is sufficient to replenish brain glucose, and the rate of dopamine turnover in your brain is measured in tens of minutes. Burnout isn't a simple depletion of chemicals in the brain that need to be restored. It's the effect of long-term sustained stress without recovery intervals.
- sterlind 6y agoyeah. Functional Neurologic Disorder is real, but its cause is not well understood and isn't to do with neurotransmitters running out. one of the hallmarks is psychogenic seizures - they look like epileptic seizures but EEG activity is normal. FND is a neurological condition caused by psychological stress or trauma. it's also regrettably used as a wastebasket diagnosis if doctors can't find what's wrong. I was paralyzed from the waist down with spasms running through my legs for an hour, and recovered through the night. neurologist didn't find anything and diagnosed me with acute paraplegia, possibly caused by throwing a clot. my psychiatrist changed that to FND when the MRIs came back clean.
