I wanted HBOMax and I had given away my AppleTV. I wasn't going to buy a new AppleTV until they upgraded it, so I bought a FireTV. Aside from the ads, it works really well and the remote is decent. I've gotten used to it, and now that the new AppleTV is out, I probably won't even bother upgrading. Or if I do, I'm on the fence about it. The Roku interface is easily the worst of the bunch.
