Show HN: The Living Box – DIY indoor farming
- rubatuga 5y agoIf anybody can scale this up to something like 2x3 feet that would be awesome
- maunic 5y agoTotally doable! What applications would you use it for?
- rubatuga 5y agoMostly lettuce, some vegetables, and a few herbs
- rtcoms 5y agoFormbot is there for something on scale of a household https://farm.bot/ https://farm.bot/
- briefcomment 5y agoCoolest thing I've seen in a while
- toomuchtodo 5y agoWow, this takes me back to one of the first indoor webcam/planting robots on the Internet. You’d click on the image, the robot would do its thing, and then the webcam would take another picture (circa 1995). https://goldberg.berkeley.edu/garden/Ars/ https://goldberg.berkeley.edu/garden/Ars/ https://youtu.be/vQE-qJ_aYPw https://youtu.be/vQE-qJ_aYPw
- e19293001 5y agoWhile the current pandemic is not yet over, there is an ongoing hype in hydroponics (soiless planting) right now. There are a lot of guides from books, youtube, reddit, facebook groups, blogs, etc. Its so much easy to automate this indoor or outdoor. People in the future will obtain free food at home. And large companies will exploit this.
- jpalomaki 5y agoYou could add lights there as well, maybe with RGB leds or something so that you can also play around with the color of the light. Just happened to remember that it was briefly mentioned in recent interview of Risto Miikkulainen by Lex Fridman that while they had been playing with evolutionary algorithms to optimize plant growth, they noticed some (might have been basil) did not really need dark time at all. - maunic 5y agoLights are definitely on my list. Ideally I'd like to keep it modular so that the user can add or remove parts depending on the crop. Some mushrooms, for instance, don't need light at all.
