Why Are Young People Pretending to Love Work? (2019)
- gjvc 6y agoThis isn't a new trend. Companies have been peddling their ways of life since well before the 1990s.
- proc0 6y agoYou will not get promoted otherwise, and possibly even get laid off. I'm a super dry person, and don't get "excited" about anything really, but it doesn't mean I don't enjoy it. However every single organization I've been in, they just want you to show enthusiasm, they just want people to really be fans of the company and what the product is. Majority of people go along with it, and you have cringe meetings with people cheering on a stupid button that does nothing, but people don't even dare question this. I really wish I could just code as part of a full time job, and at the same time not worry about getting excited about the feature or product I'm working on. I already get extremely excited with code, and solving problems, I don't understand the need to want everyone to give presentations, and show off their work like sales people.

In the past, it would have been war. Back in 1914, during the Battle of the Fronts, they were gladly mowed down by the thousands. https://medium.com/war-is-boring/sebastian-junger-knows-why-young-men-go-to-war-f163804cbf6 https://medium.com/war-is-boring/sebastian-junger-knows-why-... Of course, you can't keep wasting countless workers, often trained at great expense. Nor do you have to. Modern wars don't need armies of millions. Oh, and it's profitable. Just as it always has been. Be it in business or in war. The demand of youth to prove themselves meets an offer to do so. "War is rich old men protecting their property by sending middle and lower class young men to die. It's always been that way." George Carlin In peacetime, it is simply more economically rational to win glory on the battlefield called The Office. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0386676/ https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0386676/ Sure, they make you do it, but you want it too, right?
