I have been developing a similar theory about technology, that would define particular technologies not as specific implementations, but as a set of all possible – and perhaps unthinkable yet – compromises around the impossible. E.g., what’s a database? The definition changes over-time, but thinking of databases as “Good, useful compromises around the CAD-theorem (and its improved formulations)” might be very revealing and future-proof.
