Break Up the Ivy League Cartel
- dredmorbius 5y agoInteresting historical tidbit I'd picked up recently: in England, the reason Oxford and Cambridge are the oldest and most prestigious universities is that, until the nineteenth century they were the only permitted universities, operating under a state-mandated duopoly. https://www.historytoday.com/miscellanies/medieval-university-monopoly https://www.historytoday.com/miscellanies/medieval-universit... The association of higher education and monopoly is a curious one.

- etempleton 5y agoIt is an interesting problem. The Ivy League schools are in this position due to their reputation. It is perception that is therefore reality. The proposal to make public colleges free for those making under $125,000 is on the surface good, but will likely only further entrench the Ivy Legague as elite. The colleges really feeling the squeeze are not the ivys or the public schools, but the small private colleges. How will they compete when public colleges are free?
