The Open Source De-Googled Android Version
- _-david-_ 5y agoI have been interested in degoogled Android for a while. I am probably going to go with Graphene, but have been looking at alternatives that have better app compatibility. How does /e/ compare with Calyx? Calyx seems to be more popular from what I can tell but I couldn't find a very comprehensive comparison between the two.
- atat7024 5y agoWhat apps are you using that don't have PWA alternatives, out of curiosity?
- atat7024 5y ago(Only if they require SafetyNet or whatever, otherwise, you can get them with Aurora store)
- _-david-_ 5y agoI think navigation would be a problem with a PWA. I have only used the Google maps app so I am not really sure what other options are out there. Fdroid has OSM app that seems useable, but it wouldn't be a PWA. I think bank apps would be a big thing as well. PWA do not allow you to takr pictures of checks.
- atat7024 5y agoP.S. /e/ = LineageOS, which breaks Android's security model. Graphene, then Calyx, is a great place to start.
- nousermane 5y agoIf Android's security model precludes owner from gaining root privileges (even over adb), then on my phone, I would prefer that model broken, thank you very much.
- atat7024 5y agoYou'd rather have root in userspace than basic boot security? Your threat model must be that of Swiss cheese from air.
- nousermane 5y agoThere are already a handful of processes running as UID 0 on Android. How, exactly, enabling "adb root" changes "threat model" or whatever lofty concepts I am supposed to care about? I mean - assuming a competent user who is not going to install a "flashlight app with root permissions", or copy-paste things they don't understand off of internet, and such.
