- pjc50 5y agoWhat is "Civis Romanus Sum" if not Cicero identifying as a Roman? The particular language may be modern, but the concept of having an identity and existing in relation to a community or nation isn't. On the other hand, the exact contours of what counts as what race or ethnicity are very time and place specific.
- mxxc 5y agothe literal meaning of that sentence is "i am a roman citizen", i.e. today's transposition would be "i am a norwegian national". nothing to do with the colour of his skin or latinx or whatever. edit: worth noting that this is cicero speaking about legal status and citizenship within the empire, not caesar talking about foreign tribes calling them names, which is precisely what anyone calling garcia marquez (a latin american author) latinx (north american terminology) is doing.
