The old Flintstones was social commentary. Consumer technology was infiltrating the family home, paternalistic gender roles were changing, and all of this came with a whole lot of class anxiety. Your better-off neighbor could afford the second car and the big TV, and his wife was the one with "modern ideas."
The Flintstones took that anxiety and repackaged it as comedy. All cars ran on feet, even the fancy ones. That's funny. The designer kitchen is a mastodon's trunk. That's funny too. A fancy outfit is still just a caveman's animal hide. Comedy gold!
What anxieties will the new Flintstones address? What is it trying to do? Nothing?
