My understanding is that a panel of judges outperform grand juries, and petit juries in nearly every scenario. Sorry I don't have references on hand to support this. I currently think the main benefit of juries is to educate the public on how screwed up the whole process is. It was a waste of time in terms of protecting anyone involved, but brought my trust in the criminal judicial system to an all time low.
