Can We Do Better Than Deplatforming?
- ergot_vacation 5y agoIn other words, don't censor through full censorship, censor through rate limiting, so if people complain you can say "Hey, we didn't censor him, we're just containing his harmful ideas because we have the right (and DUTY!) to do that as the True Arbiters of What Is Right." What a load of nonsense. I suppose if your goal is to silence your opponents while minimizing the sense of martyrdom it creates, this is useful. But if you have any interest in an actually free society instead of one engineered for and by your particular beliefs (because obviously YOUR beliefs are the right ones, after all), this is worthless. The problem with deplatforming isn't that it needs to be "tweaked" somehow. It's that no one should have the power to make judgements about what is and isn't "acceptable" or "non harmful" speech, outside of edge cases like actual illegal activity. Making that power more insidious doesn't solve anything.
- EricE 5y agolol - deplatforming only works if there are just a few platforms everyone uses that like-minded thought police you approve of control. Time to move back to the decentralized web that no one organization or company controls. The mere though scares the $h!t out of "progressives" which is in itself telling. If your ideas are so crap that the only way to promote them is to silence others, then perhaps the problem isn't with other people but your ideas?
