Schools are (in my experience) not getting much better regarding student rights. They regularly confiscate devices, gloat about how the SRO can "take any phone and take all of your secrets, so we can analyze it all" (verbatim) in regards to social media problems (which shouldn't even apply outside of school), etc. Some sort of Cellebrite device that some middle-of-nowhere school has for some reason? I guess they had a deal with the local PD...
As an example, we were told in middle school that "from the moment you step outside of your house in the morning to the moment you step back into it, you are our responsibility". Because someone had sent some mildly offensive texts while waiting at the bus stop (and subsequently confiscated the phones of everyone said to be involved). I wanted to ask whether that means they would pay my medical bills or take responsibility for anything that happens as soon as I stepped out of my house. But naturally they wanted just the control, not the responsibility.
As another example, I remember being threatened with police action after I slapped my friend's neck. Imagine a grown man screaming at a 7th grader that he's going to juvie if my friend decided to "press charges". Prior to that, no offenses, model A student, but because I was playing around in gym class, I was a "criminal" and "my future was ruined". Naturally after scaring me I heard nothing more of the incident (it isn't even on my record), which is perhaps more infuriating.
