Mosaics of Positions
- pedalpete 6y agoI have to disagree with DHH's conclusion, if there is one, which seems to be that he'd hide or not discuss topics that could be interpreted as controversial, with colleagues. First off, we all need to learn that just because we may disagree on a certain topic, that doesn't mean the other person is the enemy. They just don't agree. Maybe we'll persuade them, maybe they'll persuade us, but either way, just avoiding pressing topics isn't the answer. I also believe we need to get away from his initial question of "what camp do I fit into", particularly when it's along political lines. Though we may be made up of our beliefs, we'd all be better off if we were on team human. Or team earth, or whatever you want to call it. The reason we're divided across racial/political/geographic lines is because we're identifying as "I'm [this], you're [that]". Remember when you were a kid and the high school the next county over was the enemy. Then you graduated, and maybe moved half way across the world, and if you were to meet somebody from that other high school, they'd now be a connection. You'd identify as being from the same part of the world. Many of these classifications are formed from indoctrinations we had in childhood. We need to shine the light on them and notice that they don't need to exist, rather than hide from them and pretend that we don't harbor these beliefs that "might" be considered offensive or not.
