Indeed. It's interesting to see how people like to label Apple a monopoly - a company with a 19% market share in smartphones and an 8% share on the desktop.

- elcomet 5y agoin the world sure, but it's a different story in the US.
- neogodless 5y agoAbout 15% of personal computers in the U.S. now. https://www.statista.com/statistics/576473/united-states-quarterly-pc-shipment-share-apple/ https://www.statista.com/statistics/576473/united-states-qua...
- floatboth 5y agoWhen people use the words "Apple" and "monopoly" it's more often about the iOS walled garden: because there's no (good) sideloading, Apple has a monopoly over app distribution on their mobile devices.
- ngcc_hk 5y agoAndroid did not have that and we pay less. But so. Like walled garden in a world where nobody know that you are a dog. And you have alternatives on both desktop and mobile. Success is not a crime.
- jjeaff 5y agoIs that market share based on total revenue or based on device count? I'm pretty sure it's device count. Which means we are comparing $90 smart phones to $1200 iphones that will result in thousands of dollars spent through the apple ecosystem.
- chad_c 5y agoThis is so often overlooked -- Apple's revenue capture of the market is what is astonishing. In 2019, Apple captured 32% of the global revenue for the mobile phone industry and 66% of all profit in Q3 of 2019 [1]. Asymco used to report on this frequently but I'm having trouble finding recent examples [2].
