AI Is Neither Artificial nor Intelligent
- pdimitar 5y agoThis will likely not be a popular opinion around here but I welcome the criticism to the AI area which is largely un-scrutinized and people there collect huge paychecks without much accountability. I mean we'd all love a $250K+ annual salary for loading stuff on cloud servers, making a few modifications, pushing a button and waiting an hour for the results and then rinse and repeat until the VC money dries up in 2 years, sure, but responsible usage of technology should be very much in our radar yesterday -- especially in light of the impending climate change problems that some of us will likely experience even during our lifetimes. That, plus yeah, deep learning is basically statistics on steroids. I am interested when people start telling stories about adversarial training, how a NN can actually identify faulty or deliberately malevolent data etc. but seriously, when will some practical applications emerge? Maybe it's time for another AI winter. This time around everyone has pretty powerful machines at home so they can tinker and experiment and maybe spawn an actual AI. I'd love seeing that. I'd love helping to build it, too.
