Your constant promotion of Sourcehut on unrelated topics really leaves a bad taste in my mouth and turns me off wanting to use the service.
It comes off as highly unprofessional.
- ddevault 6y agoSorry? How is this unrelated? SourceHut provides similar services without the spyware. Seems highly relevant to this thread.
- the_duke 6y agoIt's cheap marketing. You are one of relatively few people regularly trying to (ab)use Hackernews comments for promoting your own product. If you want to show how privacy friendly you are, write a blog post about it and try to get it upvoted here.
- smcleod 6y agoGitLab doesn't have "spyware" as you claim it does - it's trackers on their marketing page. The fact you'd make such a claim while promoting your own competing software just doesn't come off as constructive.
- MereInterest 6y agoThis is a tangential conversation, as I agree that the SourceHut promotion is off-topic, but I don't see a distinction between "spyware" and "trackers on their marketing page". I would define "spyware" as programs that (1) run on an end user's computer, (2) report information back to the developer of the program, and (3) include information not necessary to the running of that service. Marketing trackers do all of those, so I think it is perfectly justifiable to refer to them as "spyware".
- elygre 6y agoI see them as entirely separate, similar to how I think of Microsoft Word being different from https://microsoft.com/word https://microsoft.com/word as being entirely different.
