I find that if problem is formalized enough that it could be mapped to specific diagram schema it's actually easier just to start coding it. But before the formal idea is developed I just sketch in whatever diagram grammar seems most appropriate for the problem. We don't really use diagrams for formal communication. Most formal discussions are around concrete schemas and API:s.
