“How are you supposed to upskill yourself if you’re earning $11 an hour and have no benefits?”
There are many ways to do this. Personally, I purchased a $38 book and thought myself to code. My job at the time was picking up trash at the park for $7 an hour and since I had a child and a wife I knew I had to change our circumstance.
My single mother bought a $19 book on prepping for the USPS test and got a subbing job until she was put on full time. Before that she was putting catalogs in envelopes for $90 every two weeks.
Having low expectations is a horrid form of bigotry as it tricks the target into believing they have no potential or any way to change their reality.
There will always be jobs that require differing levels of skills. To use some euphemism to describe them deflects focus off the reality that low expectations are trapping people. This is true in parenting, coaching, teaching. Why should it be any different with making a better life.
