I wonder if high speed rail would be cheaper. Is the primary cost driver time or miles? I could see a scenario where getting a sleeper car for 10 hours would be cheaper than getting one for 36 hours.

It doesn't work out that way for the shinkansen in Japan unfortunately. I'd be surprised if Canada was much different.
