I'm this way with side projects, but I can only put in the time because I'm young without the responsibility of running a family. If you're in a position to, maybe just take some time off and find something you're particularly passionate about. For me, it's making video games (with an educational slant to be more meaningful and put less pressure on a hobby becoming a second programming job).
