Alien Artifacts on Earth and in Our Solar System Is Possible, NASA Reports
- x3n0ph3n3 6y agoWouldn't it be ludicrously short-sided and unfounded to say it's impossible? This seems like a non-story.
- geocrasher 6y agoRather than investigating this story (Which I did read up to a point and then skim) I checked out the website. It strikes me as being somewhere between X-Files, The History Channel, and Popular Science. None of those are complimentary, in my book.
- admissionsguy 6y agoI didn't look at all. The first real story about aliens will be at the top of HN with 2k+ upvotes. This is just noise.
- skindoe 6y agoAh yes the "something is true only if everyone else believes it" fallacy.
- BruceEel 6y agoThere's also the 'Looking for Lurkers: Objects Co-orbital with Earth as SETI Observables' paper by James Benford, worth reading: https://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/1903/1903.09582.pdf https://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/1903/1903.09582.pdf
- Ygg2 6y agoWhat evidence they have? It's not impossible for my pen to jump and launch itself into my gray matter. Just supremely unlikely.
- nynx 6y agoOf course it's possible. Based on a reified drake equation, it's not even likely there is any other life in the observable universe. If there were and they had visited earth, that would be astoundingly unlikely.

- BlahGod420 6y agoThat's how I read it. NASA: "Yes, there is a non-zero probability."
- lacker 6y agoIt seems reasonable to scan whatever high-resolution images we have of the surface of Mars or the Moon with some sort of anomaly detection. You wouldn’t expect to see features such as exact rectangles, for example, unless it’s something unnatural. Or maybe just something natural that we didn’t expect, which is itself interesting. I’m not sure what sort of image analysis would be the best to use here, just to find “something unexpected”....
- jtms 6y agoThe article mentions using ML to analyze and detect anomalies on the moon. Evidently there are a pair of very interesting anomalous shapes on the far side of the moon found in the Apollo footage
- poisonarena 6y agogood source? I would very much like to read more about this
- Geee 6y agoHere's the research: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/310506051_Image_Analysis_of_Unusual_Structures_on_the_Far_Side_of_the_Moon_in_the_Crater_Paracelsus_C https://www.researchgate.net/publication/310506051_Image_Ana... The "passageway" is only revealed when two images with opposing sun directions are superimposed. When those images are combined it leaves a shadow in the middle.
- retrac 6y agoPeople have already spent half a century doing just that manually. All we got was pareidolia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cydonia_(Mars) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cydonia_(Mars) Still probably worth doing to see if anything pops out?
- leptoniscool 6y agoIt would be vastly easier for an alien intelligence to build a big telescope to explore the cosmos, rather than sending out probes.
- dartharva 6y ago> Entitled NASA and The Search For Technosignatures, the 70-page document details ... Dude, this is elementary-level grammar stuff. Titled, not "entitled".
- sjcsjc 6y agoThis article disagrees. https://grammarist.com/usage/entitled-titled/ https://grammarist.com/usage/entitled-titled/
- yosito 6y agoDude, not everyone on HN speaks English as their first language. You sound like someone who has never learned another language. It's fine to point out a mistake, kindly, but there's no justification for belittling someone for something like this.
- junon 6y agoEx-pat here in Germany, normally I'd agree. This article is written by Tim McMillan, who also owns the site. He's from Georgia originally, even a former Lieutenant. He spent some time in Germany, but it doesn't appear he is originally from there. His native language is English. There is a fair amount of credit list when grammar mistakes are made (means, usually, only a small number of people, or even just one person, looked at the copy before it was published, which is a red flag). Just playing devil's advocate.
- dartharva 6y agoEnglish is my third language. And I didn't explicitly belittle anyone, sorry if you feel that. It's just that such mistakes are not warranted on a journal/newssite. Having flawless grammar in the language you're writing is an essential prerequisite for any journalist.

- domnomnom 6y agoWho wants to start a conspiracy theory that the real reason that aliens suddenly exist is the govt is trying to distract from x. Let's discuss x.
- Borrible 6y ago<conspiracy theorist mode> Of course, they are among us. They always were. That is why there is no evidence. If they were not, we would know... And if the truth is not out there, it's right in front of you. So, who want's to believe too? </conspiracy theorist mode>
- godmode2019 6y agoThat is not a new theory, the fake alien invasion has been going around for the last 2 years, and its roots are probably the Watchmen graphic novel, then later cowboy vs aliens.
- pythonbase 6y agoNew World Order? Locking down populations, forcing people to stay at home for extended periods of time, forcing them to take "medications" etc? Next step would be state enforced use of digital currencies, taking the control to next level. Conspiracy theories, of course.
- Woodi 6y agoNo need for special things like "conspiracy theory". Can be just prelude to some soon in cinemas movie :> Like "2012" and Earth doing scary things. But yea - govs are well known for doing many stupid thinghs.

- ttt0 6y ago> May have > Could > Possible I fucking love science.
- v8dev123 6y agoI have one hypothesis why Aliens are hiding. It's just they are simply afraid of humans torturing them for their color and appearance.
- OnlyMortal 6y agoA wiser man than I once said, “Oh God, aliens... Your explanation for anything slightly peculiar is aliens, isn't it? You lose your keys - it's aliens. A picture falls off the wall - it's aliens. That time we used up a whole bog roll in a day, you thought that was aliens as well!”. It was Dave Lister.
- ASalazarMX 6y agoAliens and pseudoscience fit nicely in the place religion would have. They can even share.
