That is incredible and astonishingly rare. I must assume you under the age of say, 25?
At my young peak I could hear around the 20-something kHz mark, measured at college. I'm a bit older now, the peak will be far lower, but still, my ears are my living, they serve me well.
Have you noticed anything about your higher hearing range in day to day living? Irritations from electrical hum? Sleep? First to hear the door bell?
- h2odragon 6y agoim 48; I've lost a noticeable amount of range and acuity since i was younger and picked up tinnitus spikes. My whole life has been marked by sensitivity; I knew CRT colorburst crystal whine and the notch filter on recordings that they inspired long before I understood the reasons. When in the woods i know what the mice and bugs are doing, and where. I sometimes hear lower frequencies before my hounds do. I just discovered the medical term when my teen age daughter got a diagnosis through the school, she's not happy about being different but we hope they'll allow her to skip the damned pep rallies now.
- IndySun 6y agoMisophonia is my bugbear. Though I only recently discovered it to be a thing; I just thought I was an irritable person. It is far far less concerning as I age but was quite confusing for a good couple of decades. Your story of hearing the crt and digital notches also happened to me. I rarely tune into that stuff nowadays. I feel for you.
- h2odragon 6y agocan you hear capacitors charging and discharging? I found it comforting when i discovered that source of noise, where just knowing what it is helps. Audio phase isn't discernible to most people; but you might be hearing it if you can perceive dead/bright spots in rooms at various frequencies. I think many people are more sensitive to these things than they realize, but work out coping strategies without the problem ever becoming something they're conscious of as an actual thing.
- IndySun 6y agoI hear short sounds more than people around me. I work with audio and consequently find it hard to switch 'listening' off. Hotel rooms are fun - no, it isn't a quiet room. Phase is something I notice all the time, and fix it, speakers, mixes, dead spots. You're totally right about sensitivity & coping strategies.
