I remember moaning and groaning about windows and Microsoft in the 90s and wishing someone would break the monopoly, but I had no clue what would would without making matters worse. Turning facebook or Google into a utility like at&t seems like a Bad idea.
- ergot_vacation 5y agoNobody actually needs Facebook or Twitter, even in a tech/web context, in the same way that nobody actually needs McDonalds or Coke. They're "addictive" junk food. The economy and society will work just fine without them. We DO need a powerful, uncensored search engine, but that's all the more reason to proscribe some clear limitations for that service and cut it off from being mixed up in anything else. Cut Google back to what it was in the early days: just a simple PageRank search. Keep the anti-spam measures and a handful of things like image search, but cut off the rest of the cruft. Firewall search from everything else Google has gotten into over these many years. Maybe we need a federal law that if your company runs a (major) search engine, you're not allowed to dip your toes into anything else.
