When I was a (good) high jumper in high school at least one school in our district had a landing "pad" made from a big af cardboard box (think;
: daisy-chained fridge boxes) filled with chunks (8—10cm³) of a closed-cell PU foam, like a chopped up mattress.
It was homebrew, but it performed better than the prefab event-specific mats. Those vinyl tarp covers get wicked hot in midday sun.
The main dig on the 'box-o-blocks' setup was the blocks would get dirty over time and would be in need of a block-swap for freshies.
But it was beautiful to land on.
