I, very late in life, got interested in the NBA. I grew up a "nerd" and didn't think too highly of sports. Regardless of what you think of sports, they are exceptional ways to talk to people you just met. People, even of rival teams, don't hate each other. There might be ribbing but it is a topic that makes it very easy to have commonality across demographic and socioeconomic lines.
