William Blake’s The Gates of Paradise (1787-93)
- zabzonk 5y agoYou won't find a greater fan of Blake than me, but I'm not clear for the reason of this being posted here.
- dang 5y agoIf it's intellectually interesting, it's on topic: https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html. Especially if it's unpredictable: https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&sort=byDate&type=comment&query=can%27t%20predict%20sequence%20by:dang https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&sor... Edit: I buried the lede. Tell us more about Blake!
- zabzonk 5y agoSurely that would mean that any combination of graphics and poetry would be on-topic here? Which would make the site be about culture generally, and so more than a bit diffuse?
- PaulHoule 5y agoOut of materials from a university archive, I know that this kind of image plays well.
- Kozlowski 5y agoThere’s more non tech than tech content here for the past handful of years. Not much Hacker, mostly News - and News with intention to provoke outrage at that.
- dang 5y agoThat's a big exaggeration, perhaps because what you dislike is more noticeable than what you like, leading to false feelings of generality. https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=false&query=by%3Adang%20notice%20dislike&sort=byDate&type=comment https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=false&qu...
- dang 5y agoThe feedback loops take care of that. If it gets repetitive then it gets predictable, so then it's less interesting, so then it's off topic. Who doesn't love feedback loops? Edit: I originally put these links in my GP comment but took them out because I didn't want to overdo it. However, if you read enough to grok the heuristic in each case, you'll get the basic model that this place runs by. Eventually I'll compile this material, but for the time being it's the guidelines and Algolia links: https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&sort=byDate&type=comment&query=curiosity%20optimiz%20by:dang https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&sor... https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=false&sort=byDate&type=comment&query=curiosity%20repetition%20by:dang https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=false&so... plus the link I included above: https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&sort=byDate&type=comment&query=can%27t%20predict%20sequence%20by:dang https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&sor...
- bryanrasmussen 5y agowell I mean, first off we sort of have to just agree that William Blake isn't just any combination of graphics and poetry in order to not need to post a book's worth of argument here. Second of all we might also agree that Blake as a graphic designer was something of a hacker https://www.newstatesman.com/william-blake-rebel-radical-revolutionary-tate-britain-exhibition-london-review https://www.newstatesman.com/william-blake-rebel-radical-rev... so out of all the Artist / Poets to take exception to on HN this seems really weird, and not weird in the Blakean way.

- open-source-ux 5y agoThe BBC radio programme The Forum has an episode discussing the life and works of William Blake with three experts. It's a stimulating discussion. This episode was broadcast in 2018 and can be downloaded to listen offline: The life and works of William Blake: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w3cswps4 https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w3cswps4 I can recommend The Forum in general. - readonthegoapp 5y agoThe little I know about Blake was picked up by reading Drive your plow over the bones of the dead Great book He apparently wrote a lot about the environment And was vegetarian Those images are pretty cool too. Unique-ish style
