This is necessary, but not sufficient. The other necessary thing is getting Office to run on Linux. Not an Office-compatible suite, but Office.
I use and love Pop OS (an Ubuntu variant), and I use LibreOffice for spreadsheets and text documents. I evangelize these products to friends. But LibreOffice just won't cut it. As good as it is, it does not provide 100% compatibility, and this is especially true (so I hear) for presentations. And even if it were, good luck getting your average Powerpoint jockey to actually believe in perfect compatibility.
Until you can install and run MS Office on Linux (without first installing some compatibility package), Linux will not succeed as an enterprise desktop.
- taneliv 6y agoI'm a Microsoft ignoramus, but aren't the MS Office things fully available as cloud services these days?
- Jonnax 6y agoThey are. But they're not amazing. Google Docs is better in comparison. Things like PowerPoint doesn't have 1:1 compatibility with the desktop app. It's just usable. Tbh, the current version of office 365 us very nice. It's a very polished software that Libre office doesn't really match up to in the user experience side.
- geophile 6y agoI may be a bigger MS ignoramus, I don’t know. This compatibility concern is from people to whom I’ve suggested LibreOffice.
