I think this is what BMW does with cars to a large extent (maybe all car manufacturers do?) - an example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_B58 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_B58
They combine standard parts into a number of configurations that aren't as different from each other as a consumer might imagine, then slot those engines into a whole host of different car models.
From a production stand-point, this makes sense to me. I imagine that it makes high quality at a lower price much easier to accomplish for Apple.
