I built several of these early in my career. It was a point where hard science departments were moving away from SUN, HP, and SGI workstations to PCs. This enabled them to by several computers for the cost of a single Sun system, and it really was a game changer.
The biggest pain points we had were related to the code being written. Checkpointing wasn't always done by professors, and so a power event could loose a months worth of computation. I've never seen a better argument for code reviews than this.
- sli 5y agoNever built one myself but I did grow up in the era where creating a Beowulf cluster out of something unusual was common internet humor for geeks. The last one I remember seeing was using an early model of Raspberry Pis, and most the comments were (sadly) about how Beowulf clusters aren't useful anymore (true, but irrelevant) and how it was a waste of time (objectively false). A great piece of early (or just earlier) internet died for me that day.
