There is an institution dedicated to "graduated response to piracy" in France. It is a complete fail. As far as I know, nobody ever received a letter claiming their Internet access will be restricted.
While they rely on technical system to stop piracy, they will fail.
For now it is more a societal behavior problem than a technical one. The only way I see to fight efficiently piracy is to make easier to pay than to pirate things. I predict a very long mouse and cat fight.
- mrspandex 15y agoI do agree that piracy is a societal problem, but the "buying needs to be simpler than piracy" argument is crap. Look at music - I can buy any album I can think of on Amazon with one click. The problem is that people don't want to pay money for what they can get for free and they don't feel shame in pirating it.
- william42 15y agoFrom everything I've heard, the rise of things like Amazon Music, Netflix, Steam, etc. has vastly decreased piracy in the United States, and most piracy nowadays is by people in the developing world, which is something I have trouble caring about.
- ruby_on_rails 15y agoYet I still can't purchase the Ghost in the shell soundtrack.. A best selling film from 1995 and I still have never seen it in itunes, amazon, whatever. I had a cd shipped to me a couple years ago. But easy purchasing music, most certainly not. Also, I have yet to ever meet an artist that is upset about piracy. All of them make money on tours, not albums. Record companies make money on albums. Secondly, the mass p2p shakedown schemes should give you a fair idea of what this agreement means. Some lawyer says you infringed a copyright and has some obscure document "proving" it There have been plenty of white papers written showing how completely misleading and fraudulent the evidence put forward by these lawyers are. Do you seriously think that this new agreement will be any different? Hell, they don't even have to convince a judge, they just have to claim there's a wolf and AT&T will be there to kill the sheep.
