For those new to the browser wars, Chrome beat Microsoft's entrenched browser monopoly by adroitly leading on quality and security. Also, I think there might be something to the modern computer user having more awareness that "cross-platform" might matter even if they don't personally use 3 platforms every day.
- TheCoelacanth 6y agoDon't forget extremely aggressive marketing and paying affiliates for installs. For a long time, all of the shady adware installers were installing Chrome behind your back.
- spacemanmatt 6y agoAgreed, Google is no saint. But compared to the dirty tricks campaign Microsoft waged overtly through leveraging OS bugs against competitors and threatening competitors (read: what the DOJ sued them over) Google was the relatively clean choice. Hindsight makes them look way worse, of course.
