Confirmed We Live in a Simulation
- AnimalMuppet 6y agoThis whole argument is totally bogus. If I'm running a simulation, the whole "clock speed" argument only applies if I'm trying to run the simulation in real time. Second, the speed of light doesn't manifest itself the way a clock rate limit would. You'd see it as a minimum value of the time difference between two events, not as a maximum propagation speed. (I mean, I suppose you could assume separate hardware for each physical point, and get to a maximum propagation speed that way. It's hard to see how you would get the rest of special relativity, though, so... this "explanation" doesn't explain nearly enough.) Oh. It says "Opinion" right at the top. So what's really confirmed is that somebody who believes that we live in a simulation talked Scientific American into publishing (as an opinion piece) something that they wrote. Nothing more.
- failwhaleshark 6y agoSpeculation: new and improved! Operators are standing by (to unplug you from the Matrix). The simulation hypothesis is like the cosmological argument or intelligent design; it's an unprovable belief attempting to explain first cause. And the first and last attempt to stretch themselves thin over life and consciousness too. Ultimately, I think all 3 trip and fall flat on their faces onto Occam's razor until evidence or an experiment can be constructed to prove or explain such an unprovable (it seems impossible a priori). "Prove god exists." lol :) PS: The moon is made of cheese too. Ssssh.
- giorgioz 6y agoI don't find the whole discussion about simulation or not simulation so brilliant and interesting anymore. Is it likely we exist within something bigger? Yes of course. Your city is within a country, your country is within a continent, your continent within a planet, galaxy, universe. So yes very likely there is something bigger containing our universe. That does not mean though the object that contain us is the top. It's not like there is THE ONE REALITY simulating us in THE ONE SIMULATION. It's more probable that we are inside of a bigger reality and that reality is also inside something else and it might go on like this endlessly. That does not imply that our reality is less real than the others outer or inner realities.
