I disagree. Spanking is coercive, psychologically harmful and it teaches the child their body is ruled by a bully.
- ColinWright 15y agoI'm assuming you have significant peer-reviewed documentation of this? You are certainly very definite about it - can you point me at the research that supports your point of view? Note, I'm not questioning it, and I'm not saying what my stance is, I'm just asking that you provide some evidence. I know some people who were never physically chastised as children and who have been - in the opinion of multiple independent professionals - deeply screwed up by the psychological manipulation. I also know people who as children were "chastised" to the point of requiring hospitalisation. The damage there was more obvious.
- systemtrigger 15y agoBeating people who are very young is wrong. That seems axiomatic to me. I do not have a medical journal article bookmarked to satisfy your question but can suggest "On Children and Childrearing" by Henry H. Lindner M.D. http://henrylindner.net/Writings/Childrearing.html http://henrylindner.net/Writings/Childrearing.html
- guylhem 15y agoYou have your liberal opinion, good for you. Personally, I'm shocked a judge did condemn a mother for spanking, especially if it was reasonable (ie no bruise, etc) and legally allowed. The problem here is not so much your on my opinion, but someone being condemned for doing something the laws says is legal.
- systemtrigger 15y agoI have never encountered a situation when beating a defenseless person seemed like the reasonable thing to do. The law should be changed.
- sp332 15y agoIt's not always true, but as I was growing up, it generally was. Of course it doesn't take the place of communication. Spanking is used when you're training a kid out of bad behavior, not when they annoy you.
